The old city actually is painted pink — terracotta pink, to be exact — and it was done that way in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales. Amber Fort sits on a hill just outside the city and is one of the finest forts in Rajasthan. Hawa Mahal (the Palace of Winds) is the one you’ve seen in every photo. City Palace is still partly a royal residence. And the bazaars — textiles, jewellery, blue pottery — are some of the best shopping you’ll find anywhere in India.
